MSN to Issue Music Refunds?
Yahoo Music is now offering refunds to customers who had bought its songs. Does this mean that other music vendors such as MSN will follow Yahoo’s lead? Yahoo had announced that it will no longer give authorization keys over the digital rights management (DRM) on the songs. Basically, this just means that while people who bought the songs will still be able to listen to music but they cannot move it to other devices.
A lot of web users are unhappy with this development. But Yahoo wants to go a step further; in the case when a customer refuses the refund, Yahoo will try to give customers copies of the song in DRM-free MP3 version. Yahoo Music looks to transfer its customers to the RealNetworks’ Rhapsody service from Yahoo Music Unlimited.
Both brands deal with subscription music so those who make the move will be decidedly unaffected by this shift. The question is, would the Yahoo move raise the bar and will MSN offer refund to their customers as well? Well, Microsoft announced that MSN will continue to offer the keys for the next three years.
