Palm Treo 500v a ‘Smart’ smart phone ?

 

 

 

Palm released the long-rumored Treo 500v for subscribers in Europe. It does have a new flatter style that we’ve been seeing in many a fuzzy photos, but there’s hardly much new under the hood though.

Set to arrive in Europe and South Africa next month, 500v’s shell represents most significant redesign in years. The shell’s flatter with rounded edges the 500v bears a striking resemblance with the Dash on T-Mobile. It is a welcome change alright; the Treo had looked the same for ages, since 2002. You might confuse it with upcoming Centro for Sprint, but that is a different model. No word on US release or pricing, but I’m sure it’ll happen soon!

It is still Windows Mobile 6, stripped down version of the WM6. That means no stylus nor a touch screen. Navigation is by a 4-way mouse. Decent suite of mobile Office apps that includes Word, Excel, and Power point with push e-mail are included. Also includes SMS, instant messaging and mobile version of Windows Media Player.

500v can access European 3G, UMTS networks for speedy data access. Additional hardware included are a 2 mega pixel camera, Blutooth 2.0. 150 MB built in, user accessible memory and a expansion slot for microSD memory cards.

OUR TAKE : It is a solid phone but nothing to set the world on fire. Treo could have used a barnburner in the wake of the Foleo smartphone debacle.
