Verizon Wins Open Access in FCC
Verizon has won the nationwide license for the coverage in C-Block 700MHz spectrum from the Federal Communications Commission. If you are wondering what all the fuzz is all about, then realize that Verizon will now be in control of the spectrum required by the FCC to adhere to specific open-access rules.
Another thing that makes this development interesting is that Google has actually lobbied for the inclusion of several rules for the 700MHz spectrum auction. But the FCC only adopted a single proposed Google rule which is to allow the winner to put any kind of application to be able to connect to a network that makes use of this spectrum.
Google has promised to bid on this spectrum in the FCC auction although it looks as if they were not really serious in the venture. The main aim seems to be to push the auction price above the $4.6 threshold in order to ensure that open access will go into effect. So it is not really surprising for Verizon to win this particular FCC auction. It seems as if the company will now be able to include this particular spectrum to its open device endeavors. They announced that subscribers can bring their own phone and other devices into the said network.
