Microsoft brings new Cheaper XBOX 360 , Arcade to Face competition from Wii

XBOX 360 Arcade, a version of the Xbox 360, availability was announced by Microsoft this Tuesday. Some sharp eyed gamers did notice them on store shelves earlier. Arcade is available for $279,99 and comes with HDMI connector and 256 MB memory that can store games and entertainment content. A wireless controller is included.

The package comes with 5 games :

• Pac-man championship edition
• Uno
• Luxor 2
• Boom Boom Rock
• Feeding Frenzy

These were available earlier only to Xbox 360 users who signed up for Live Arcade online service. These games are no trial versions but are full featured ones.

With an HDMI connector the Xbox Arcade integrates easily with home entertainment system including a HDTV with home theater sound and is capable of displaying video at 1080i. One may have to run out and get a HDD to store sufficient content as the storage on the box is limited.

Microsoft also announced release of “family oriented programming” on the Xbox Live service. These include 100 new episodes of Warner brothers and Nickelodeon TV shows. They can be purchased and downloaded for viewing on Xbox 360. The collection includes classics like Bugs Bunny and Duffy Duck cartoons. New games released for the Xbox Live Arcade are SpongeBob Squarepants: Underpants Slam and Shrek-n-Roll.

While Microsoft offers two configurations of Xbox 360 at $349.99 and $449.99, this version should be attractive to budget minded families. This is directed at this segment for the upcoming holiday season. Other two higher versions offer more storage and some compatibility with the older Xbox games. Other contenders are Sony and Nintendo obviously. Sony’s recently released PSP 3 is still placed at the higher bracket at $399. Nintendo is probably placed most advantageously with its Wii consoles priced at $249.99. Supply of these are still a little scarce while PS3 and Xbox360 fill the store shelves.
