Everyone has heard of the term digital SLR cameras because this is the new trend in professional digital photography these days. But an amateur photographer might wonder, what are SLR cameras anyway? Digital SLR is basically short for digital single lens reflex; it is named as such because it uses a mirror placed behind the lens in order to direct the light towards a viewfinder when you’re trying to get the perfect shot. When you release its shutter, this mirror will swing away so that the light will travel straight towards the sensor and block out the viewfinder temporarily. In SLR camera, the viewfinder also makes use of prism generally a pentaprism which flips the image so that you will see it with its right side up.
The SLR camera design also permits the camera to accommodate different lens focal lengths; this is the reason why this type of camera dominates professional photography these days. Take note that in non-SLR cameras, you will need to complement the angle of the “viewing lens” with the “taking lens”. It may be easy with a short-range zoon or even a fixed lens but it necessities expensive viewfinder features.
