Computer Virus Attack against Hospital
Hospitals contain some of the most vital data with regards to a person’s health, credit card number, social security number, and other personal information. So it is without a doubt necessary for hospital officials to guard these data to the best of their abilities. It was a great concern then when a computer virus attacked the system of the Cascade Healthcare Community last December but hospital officials only noticed suspicious activities this February.
A computer forensic specialist confirmed that a virus did indeed cause the security breach. Because of this, the data of around 11,000 people had donated to Central Oregon may be compromised. It is believed that the names, the birth dates, and the credit card numbers may have been exposed but no health information was revealed.
The incidence of computer viruses attacking computer systems of large organizations such as hospitals is alarming. These organizations should develop more sophisticated systems that will protect not only the interests of their clients but to protect their own networks as well. Viruses can cause great damage and the expense associated with fixing its damages may be more than anyone has bargained for.

Spam Settlements
Spam e-mail messages can be irritating so it is good news that some spam operations have become illegal. This is particularly true in the case of x-rated website operations that send out spams to millions of potential customers on their e-mail. Usually, these websites pay affiliates to use illegal e-mails in order to drive visitors into their site.
The latest X-rated website operator to be caught spamming consumers is Cyberheat, Inc. The company was forced to pay $413,000 as civil penalty in the settlement they reached together with the Department of Justice and FTC. The settlement also barred the company from implementing illegal marketing tactics in the future. In addition, Cyberheat was required to monitor their affiliate activity in order to ensure that everyone connected to the company is complying with the law.
You should take note that this case is not the first of its kind. As early as 2005, FTC has already cracked down seven companies who had exposed consumers including children to sexual content over the internet. This is against federal laws but five of these cases were settled. The settlement made by Cyberheat brings the total civil penalty to more than $1.6 million over these kinds of cases.
