$240 Worth of Online Losses for 2007
Research shows that internet crimes for 2006 amounted to losses reaching $240 million; this is an increase of 20% compared to the previous year. The Internet Crime Report stated that there are new areas of scams that are growing at a quick pace including dating frauds and even the purchase of pets.
The Internet Crime Report Center (IC3) is operated by the FBI together with the National White Collar Crime Center. It received 206,884 complaints during 2007 with regards to cyber crime; from this figure, around 90,000 were transferred to law enforcement for solutions and follow-up but the dollar value of these cases are put at around the $240 million figure.
According to FBI Cyber Division Assistant, “The internet presents a wealth of opportunity for would-be criminals to prey on unsuspecting victims” and indeed, everyone knows this to be true. And if the several million estimated amount of losses look big, even more astounding is that not all crimes get reported to the FBI so the total losses are unknown.
But what remains consistent in 2007 from the previous years is the fact that auction scams still remains to be the most common type of online crime. Many people still complain of sellers not delivering on the product after payment has been made.

Vulnerabilities in VoIP
More than a hundred vulnerabilities were discovered in voice-over-internet-protocol or VoIP hardware from distinguished vendors such as Cisco, Nortel, and Avaya. According toe VoIPshield Laboratories, the vulnerabilities can be exploited by hackers who want to spy on individuals and organizations. These hackers have the ability of record calls as well as extort money by using threats of service outrages. On the other hand, the VoIP vendors argue that the threats that currently exist are quite minimal.
VoIP Laboratories is the research department of the VoIP Systems which provides security tools for VoIP setups. They have offered to help vendors identify remedies for the vulnerabilities and three vendors were chosen because of their popularity in the market. Other vendors such as Microsoft will come under scrutiny as well.
The kind of vulnerabilities seen in the company web site was categorized according to the exploiter’s intent such as code execution, unauthorized access, and denial of service. Searches by vendor vulnerabilities are also possible; the severity ratings can be noted in the website as well. Despite the severity ranking provided, the information contained on the website is not enough for a potential attacker to make use of the information against the VoIP vendors.
