Microsoft is Gambling Its Profits Online
A lot of financial analyst grumble that Microsoft is putting too much of its profits to its online services endeavors. However, everyone cannot help but think that Microsoft may be on to something. Think about it; wouldn’t the newspaper industry also have some complaints a decade ago if Gannetts and Knights put their profits into online ventures when they were enjoying big profits from their ad revenues? And wouldn’t the newspaper industry now think that it was a brilliant idea right now if Gannetts and Knights have actually done this?
Traditionally, newspapers have been funded by advertising in areas such as help wanted, real estate, and car sales. Had a large newspaper company invested in online advertising earlier, it would have been in a much better shape. This analogy is not perfect though because newspaper lose revenue to internet sources. Meanwhile, Microsoft is steering clear of advertising by concentrating on its software.
A battle between Google and Microsoft is fast beginning to appear. The real question is whose economic power would become stronger. Google is funding its data centers through online advertising while Microsoft is using its Windows software to fund its ventures. Microsoft needs to show results from its online ventures to recover its investments.

AOL and Yahoo Talks
The Yahoo and Time Warner deal has been brewing for months and even years when you take their previous discussions into consideration. Time Warner is giving hints on a potential partnership while almost the same information is being leaked from Yahoo. The problem is, Reuters report notes that the two companies don’t appear closer to signing a deal than they were in the past at the time when Microsoft offered a buy-out bid to Yahoo.
On the other hand, Wall Street Journal reported that the deal is getting some traction because the $33 per share offer for Yahoo was withdrawn. But similar to Reuters, the paper also believes that the talks don’t seem to be serous. For one, they note that the combination have an estimated value of $10 billion on AOL but that was before the Yahoo shares lowered back to trading levels.
In the end, it all comes down to Yahoo looking for alternative ways to bring its value back to $33 per share that Microsoft had already initially offered before talks broke down last May. Meanwhile, Microsoft is searching for ways to improve its advertising search business similar to those by Google.

Microsoft Withdraws from Yahoo
Microsoft has withdrawn its offer to acquire Yahoo after the talks between them broke down last May 1, 2008. Microsoft had offered as much as $33 per share but Yahoo stood its ground and they were holding out at $37 per share. Because of this, Microsoft decided to withdraw. But there are also strategic issues aside from the financial one. For example, Microsoft believes that it is almost impossible to achieve a friendly process of integrating the two giants.
Microsoft first made a bid to acquire Yahoo last February at $31 per share. However, this bid was not accepted and the two sides went on fruitless negotiation process for several months. Not being able to integrate means that both companies will be left in a tenuous position because of their rivals’ current position in the market. Microsoft had hoped that it can gain a competitive edge against its rival, Google, using Yahoo. It aimed to increase its internet advertising business.

One major issue with the Windows Mobile is actually its user interface because it looks quite convoluted.
